3.4.1846 Pope Gregory XVI established the Apostolic Vicariate of Central
Africa with see at Khartoum. The new Vicariate was bordered to the N by
the Ap. Prefecture of Tripoli and Ap. Vicariate of Egypt ; in the E by
the Red Sea, the Ap. Vic. of Abyssinia and the Ap. Vic of Senegambia ;
in the S by the « Mountains of the Moon » estimated at 12 degrees
lat. S of the Equator. It was considerably larger than twice the size of
Europe, with a population of 90 to 100 millions.
1862-1872 It was attached to the Ap. Vicar of Egypt
30.5.1913 The new name was Ap. Vicariate of Khartoum (new
vicariates started being carved out of the original territory).
12.12.1974 Erected Archdiocese, Metropoolitan See.
2. Extent : It comprises the administrative provinces of the
following States : Khartoum (6 provinces - 12 parishes), Northern (3 prov.
- 1 par.), Red Sea (3 prov. - 1 par.), Nahr el Neel (5 prov.- 2 par.),
Kassala (5 prov. - 2 par.), Gezira (6 prov. - 2 par.), Gedaref (4 prov.

b) Vicariate for the Displaced erected in 1992 to care for the population
evicted from the urban areas of the capital and resettled forcibly in Jebel
Awlia (40 km S Khartoum), As-Salam (Jabarona) (17 km SW Omdurman), Dar
es-Salam (20 km W Omdurman), and Wad ramlly (5 km W Suk Libya, Omdurman).
c) Khartoum Pastoral Area, which covers the remaining areas established
in 19%93-
