Malakal is the capital of Upper Nile State

1. Historical notes :
10.01.1933 : Erected « missio-sui-juris » of Kodok, detached from the Ap.Vicariate of    Khartoum.
04.08.1938 : Ap. Prefecture of Kodok
04.07.1949 : Ap. Prefecture of Malakal
12.12.1974 : Diocese of Malakal, suffragan of Juba

2. Extent :  The Diocese of Malakal comprises the six provinces (North Upper Nile, Sobat, Fashoda, Maban, Tonga, Renk, Mellut) of Upper Nile State ; the four provinces (Rubkona, Pariang, Leer, Mayom) of Wihda State ; the four provinces (Bor, Nahr Pibor, Akobo, Fam el Szaraf) of Jongley State.

Area : 238.000 km sq - Population : 2.750.000 - Catholics : 45.000

3. Ordinary : H.E. Bishop Vincent Mojwok Nyiker, born in Atigo-Tonga (Malakal) 25.1.1933; ordained Priest 21.7.1963 ; appointed Ap. Administrator of Malakal in 1977 ; consecrated Bishop 27.5.1979.
