Wau is the capital of the Western Bahr el Ghazal State and the headquarter of Wau province of the same State.

20.05.1913 : Apostolic Prefecture of Bahr el Ghazal detached from the Ap. Vicariate of Central Africa.

2 - Extent : The Diocese of Wau comprises two States : West Bahr el Ghazal (two provinces Wau and Raja) and Norh Barh-el-Ghazal (two provinces Aweil and Ariath) and two provinces (Grogrial and Turalei) of Warap State.
Pastoral situation : By a written understanding the communities beyond our reach are entrusted to the Ordinary of Rumbek ; we support with personnel and other resources according to availability. Practically the following areas are under the care of Rumbek Ordinary : North Bahr et Ghazal State (except for Aweil Town and along the railway) ; the provinces of Grogrial, Turalei and Apuk of Warap State ; all communities living 15-20 miles from Wau.
Area : 150.000 sq. km. - Population : 2.7 million.
Catholics : 30 % - Moslems 3 % - Anglicans and other Christian 1% - Animists : 66 %
