Josephine Bakhita

Bakhita was born in Dar fur (West of Sudan) about 1869, a slave girl from 1878 to 1883, baptised at Venice (Italy) in 1890, joined the Canossian Sisters (Daughter of Charity) in 1893 and died at Schio (Italy) on February 8, 1947. She was beatified by the Pope John Paul II on May 17, 1992 and declared Saint in May 1999. Her feast is celebrated on February 8. Her canonisation will be in 2000.
 
 
 

Daniel Comboni was born in Italy in 1831, was ordained priest in 1854 ; in 1857 came missionary to Sudan. In 1877 he was consecrated bishop of Khartoum, where he died on 10.10.1881. He founded the Comboni Missionaries (men and women). He was beatified by the Pope John Paul II on 17 th March 1996. His feast is celebrated on October 10.
