 Diocese of Torit

 

Torit, is the headquarter of Imatong province of East Equatoria State.

1.  Historical notes :
02.03.1983 : Diocese, suffragan of Juba, detached from Juba

2.  Extent :  Torit Diocese comprises the three Eastern provinces of the East Equatoria State : Kapoeta, Imatong, Magwi ; and the eastern end of the province of Yei of Bahr el Gebel State.

- Pastoral situation :  Due to the civil war, the See of the diocese is temporarily at Narus, 50 km from the Kenyan border. The greater part of the diocesan area is controlled by the SPLA. Torit and some other larger villages are controlled by the Central Government and cannot be served from Narus. By an agreement with the Bishop of Malakal, the Bishop of Torit takes pastoral care of the parish and area of Boma, of the diocese of Malakal.

- Area : 79.000 km. sq.  -  Population : 550.000  - Catholics : 410.000

3.  Ordinary :  H.E. Bishop Paride Taban, born in Opari (Juba) in 1936 ; ordained Priest 24.5.1964 ; consecrated Bishop, auxiliary of Juba, 4.05.1980 ; transferred to Torit  2.7.1983

6 - Parishes :

6.1 - Narus : (46 km  from the borders with Kenya) - Founded in 1993.
- It is the residence of the Bishop.
- There are 13 centres serving the displaced : 
Loyoro- Kalala - Peimong - Lotahawa - Nanyangachor - Lolim - Namorupus - Pongo -Nawokoro - Kotein - Natinga - Buno - Mogos

6.2 - Chukudum :  200 km SE Torit. - Founded in 1946. Eastern Deanery
- There are 16 prayer centres serving the displaced : Lorema - Kikilai - Lotukei - Nyakilod - Ngatuba - Kadumakuch - Loudo - Kaunda - Kathaach - Dokoch - Kapeta - Nawokomedo - Longumo - Carret - Bokorora - New Cush.

6.3 - Isoke :  180 km SW Torit - Founded in 1926.
Isoke serves five ethnic groups :
- 8 Lotuho speaking centres : Burung - Lobira - Ilieu - Tuhubak - Iloli - Loguruny - Lolianga - Logulyore

- 22 centres Lango-Lokwa : Hukuuk - Kekerek - Bolie - Momoria - Koko - Ikotos - Ukak - Iyak - Iteuso - Logire - Lohaforok - Lobwaye - Lomwo - Lomogoro - Lofulung - Lofayo - Lenyleny -Ngatube - Rumusa - Lokorohore - Ngaluma - Tseretenya

- 4 centres Bira-Ketebo : Nakoringole - Bira - Lofus - Lotome

- 6 centres Loghir : Hiriafit - Chahari - Lohiliak - Mangala - Chorokol - Lodwaara

- 1 centre Dongotono : Isoke

6.4 - Torit :  - Founded in 1920
It is the official Seed of the Bishop. The town is controlled by the Central Government. The church works in the countryside where people live

There are 21 centres serving the displaced : Gunyoro in Ifwota - Iyodo - Imurok Iddo - Imurok Guntoro - Imurok Lohufe - Imurok Okebu - Hilieu - Katire - Ilany - Haforiere - T Angole - Hilaya - Murahatiha - Calamini - Hidonge - Longelet - Loronyho - Loudo - Lomorwo - Loudo - Lohiri - Loming.

6.5 - Lafon - Lopit  (30 km NW Torit) - Founded in 1948 
The centres are divided as follows :

- 4 N West Lopit : Longiro - Bwara - Lohomiling - Haba 
- 5 S West Lopit : Lossou - Odongiok - Idale Mure - Tabwor - Ibele
- 14 East Lopit : Loturo - Lohidodmok - Lonyamut - Tariri - Lohitojo - Mura Lopit - Imehejek - Ihirang - Lelang - Iboni - Imaluha - Ibahure - Lohutok - Lalanga

6.6. - Palotaka : 70 km S Torit - Founded in 1933
They serve 20 prfayer centres :
- 8 Western Acholi : Agoro Ywai - Ago Lalam - Omeo - Panykwara - Owiny Hibul - Magwi - Kit - Ame

- 12 Eastern Acholi : Palaka - Obo - Opalae - Iyire - Lerwa - Pajok - Palwar - Kilenga - Lobone - Upper Talanga - Poge - Agala

6.7 - Loa : 130 km S Torit - Founded in 1921.
- It serves 19 prayer centres : Iria - Pageri - Kerepi - Moli Tokuro - Moli Andru - Sakole - Kerikeri - Patibi - Opari - Aswa displacedd camp Mugali. 
Two displaced camps : Mugali One displaced camp which comprises : Ganji - Arumadrili - Masindi - Biliniang - Sau - Longa.

6.8 - Naita - Lotimot - Founded 1997

6.9   Boma : - Foundedd 1997
- Belongs to the diocese of Malakal, close to the Ethiopian border.

6.10 - Lokichokio (Kenya)
Travelling and logistic Coordination Centre

6.11 - Kapoeta : 200 km NE Torit. - Founded in 1935
Capital of the East Equatoria State and headquarter of Kapoeta province bordering with Ethiopia.

6.12 - Lowoy (Okaru)  - 25 km W Torit - Founded in 1947

6.13 - Lerwa : Founded in 1925
